A technical analysis and reconstruction of the famous US Navy Gimbal video. The footage shows an unidentified object captured by a fighter jet.
This episode reconstructs the geometry of the US Navy’s Gimbal video, recorded on a January 2015 night off the US East Coast. In the clip, a crew member says the object is rotating. The video was released in 2017, and the Department of Defense confirmed it was genuine in 2020. That confirmation did not identify the object.
The reconstruction examines the display margins, the camera system’s roll, and the stepped appearance of the rotation, then adds a range dial that was not shown on screen. One interpretation is a distant jet flying straight, with its glare creating the apparent rotation. Another is a nearby object that would have to brake to a stop; in the reconstruction, it reverses against a 120-knot wind. The video labels its elements as reported, measured, modelled, or readings, and leaves viewers to weigh the interpretations.
