Borman Reported an Unidentified Object Alongside Hundreds of Particles
In the same exchange, Jim Lovell described a bright object. The transcript identified it as the spacecraft’s booster.

Borman reported an unidentified object and hundreds of particles. Lovell described a bright object, which the transcript identified as the spacecraft’s booster.
Transcript excerpt from NASA tape T-00763(R1b) of the Gemini VII (GT-7/6) mission air-to-ground communications, dated approximately 4 hours 24 minutes into the flight. The Public Affairs Officer (P.A.O.) introduces a dubbed playback of the master tape from the Control Center, which contains references to a sighting of particles, an unidentified object (a 'bogey'), and the spent booster. Astronaut Frank Borman reports a 'bogey at ten o'clock high' and many small particles passing the spacecraft, while astronaut James Lovell describes the booster as a brilliant body slowly tumbling at the two o'clock position. The P.A.O. concludes by clarifying that the third unidentified object referenced was the bogey. The document also contains three pages of handwritten notes annotating segments of the mission audio recording, which are largely illegible due to OCR quality.
During the Gemini VII mission, astronaut Frank Borman reported a 'bogey at ten o'clock high' to Houston. He further described 'hundreds of little particles going by to the left out about three or four miles' on what looked like a path crossing the vehicle's trajectory at 90 degrees, stating they were 'going into polar orbit.' Astronaut James Lovell described the booster as 'a brilliant body in the sun against a black background with trillions of particles on it,' positioned at his two o'clock and slowly tumbling. Houston asked whether the small particles were in addition to the booster and the bogey. The P.A.O. later clarified that the 'third and unidentified object' referenced in the conversation was the bogey.
"SINCE THEN WE HAVE DUBBED THE TAPE OFF. THE MASTER TAPE HERE IN THE CONTRO[L] CENTER AND WE ARE NOW PREPARED TO PLAY If FOR YOU - IT CONTAINS REFERENCES TO SIGHTING NOT ONLY SOME PARTICLES BUT AS WELL AS AN UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT PLUS THE BOOSTER"
Speaker: P.A.O. (Public Affairs Officer)
Why it matters: Public Affairs Officer explicitly frames the tape as containing a reference to an 'unidentified object' separate from the booster and particles.

"(BORMAN) A BOGEY AT TEN O'CLOCK HIGH."
Speaker: Frank Borman
Why it matters: Initial astronaut sighting report of an unidentified object.
Page 1
"ROGER. GEMINI-7 ISTHAT THE BOOSTER OR IS THAT A NATURAL SIGHTING?"
Speaker: Houston
Why it matters: Mission Control immediately attempts to attribute the sighting to a known object or natural phenomenon.
Page 1
"(BORMAN) WE HAVE DEBRIS UP HERE - THIS IS AN ACTUAL SIGHTING."
Speaker: Frank Borman
Why it matters: Borman insists the sighting is real and distinct from routine debris.
Page 1
"(BORMAN) WE ALSO HAVE THE BOOSTER IN SIGHT."
Speaker: Frank Borman
Why it matters: Confirms the booster is a separate, simultaneously visible object — distinguishing it from the bogey.

"(BORMAN) WE HAVE VERY, VERY MANY A - IT LOOKS LIKE HUNDREDS OF LITTLE PARTICLES GOING BY TO THE LEFT OUT ABOUT THREE OR FOUR MILES."
Speaker: Frank Borman
Why it matters: Description of large particle field passing the spacecraft.

Page 1 is a clean typed transcript and is highly legible. Pages 2–4 are handwritten annotation notes (apparently logging tape contents/timestamps) and are largely unreadable through OCR — only fragments are recoverable. Bracketed corrections in quoted passages (e.g., 'CONTRO[L]', 'THR[EE]', 'MUR[?]') reflect transcription artifacts in the OCR'd document. The bogey is widely understood in the public record to have been part of an in-orbit prank by the Gemini VII crew, but this excerpt itself does not state that resolution; findings are kept to what the document says. Pairs with companion DVIDS audio/video excerpt (slug 020-dvids-1006119).
The transcript describes them separately: the bright object is identified as the booster, while the object Borman reported remains unidentified.
Borman reported hundreds of particles and an unidentified object. Lovell described a bright object that the transcript identifies as the booster.
Speaker: Frank Borman
Why it matters: Particle path crosses the spacecraft trajectory at a perpendicular angle.
Page 1
"(BORMAN) THEY'VE PASSED NOW. THEY'RE GOING INTO POLAR ORBIT."
Speaker: Frank Borman
Why it matters: Astronaut characterizes the particles' motion as a polar orbit, distinct from Gemini VII's own orbital plane.
Page 1
"(LOVELL) ROGER. I HAVE THE BOOSTER ON MY SIDE.ITS A BRILLIANT BODY IN THE SUN AGAINST A BLACK BACKGROUND WITH TRILLIONS OF PARTICLES ON IT."
Speaker: James Lovell
Why it matters: Lovell's description of the booster's appearance and accompanying particle cloud.
Page 1
"(LOVELL) ITS AHEAD OF US AT TWO O'CLOCK, SLOWLY TUMBLING"
Speaker: James Lovell
Why it matters: Confirms the booster's position and motion.

"THIS IS GEMINI CONTROL AGAIN THE REFERENCE IN THAT CONVERSATION TO THR[EE] THIRD AND UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT OF COURSE WAS OR THE THIRD OBJECT WAS A MUR[?] BOGEY. THERE WERE SEVERAL REFERENCES TO THE BOGEY. AT 4 Hrs 24 MIN into THE FLIGHT THIS IS GEMINI CONTROL."
Speaker: P.A.O. / Gemini Control
Why it matters: Official post-playback clarification that the 'third and unidentified object' referenced was the bogey, with timestamp 4 hours 24 minutes into the flight.

Frank Borman and Jim Lovell were aboard Gemini 7 when Borman reported an unidentified object to Mission Control. He described its position as if the sky were a clock: at ten o’clock, slightly above the horizon.
Borman also reported hundreds of particles passing alongside the spacecraft. Lovell described a bright object surrounded by many particles. The transcript identifies the bright object as the spacecraft’s booster. But was that also the object Borman saw? The distinction between the two descriptions is at the heart of the story.
Borman told Mission Control in Houston that the particles were small and numerous, and passed to the left of the spacecraft. He estimated they were about 6 kilometers away. The crew could also see the booster, the part that helps propel the spacecraft into orbit.
A short time later, Borman said the particles had passed and seemed to be moving into orbit around Earth. It sounded like a fleeting sight, but the exchange continued: Mission Control tried to determine whether the particles were associated with the booster or the unidentified object.
Lovell described an object shining in the sunlight against a black background, surrounded by a mass of particles. He said it was ahead and to his right, and appeared to be rotating slowly. When Mission Control asked whether it was the booster, he confirmed that it was the booster as seen from the side.
In the transcript, the booster and the unidentified object appear as two separate things. Handwritten notes add another detail: the words “Borman UFO sighting” appear beside the exchange.
It is unclear what the object Borman called unidentified was, or where the particles came from. The transcript identifies Lovell’s bright object as the booster, but does not explain what Borman saw.
Against the black background, a bright object remained, surrounded by dots. The object Borman marked at ten o’clock still has no explanation.
