A Red Light Dropped Into a Dry Wash—and Vanished

Two travelers saw red lights near the mountains. One watched a glow descend into a dry wash and move along it, then discovered his watch was 25 minutes fast.
They drove to an intersection for a better view, but the lights had disappeared by the time they arrived. They returned to their original location but did not find them.
The record does not explain the discrepancy. The watch continued to run fast afterward.
In 2026, two people were driving on a road in the western United States. Through the rain and clouds, they spotted two red lights above a mountain ridge and stopped to get a better look.
The lights vanished, then others appeared. One seemed very low. At the same time, one traveler saw a glow descend into a dry wash and move through it. When the two drove closer, the lights disappeared. Later, they discovered that one traveler’s watch was 25 minutes fast.
One of the travelers told the FBI, which investigated the incident, that he had watched the lights through a device that improved visibility in the dark. To the naked eye, they looked like short red lines; through the device, they appeared round, with a halo. His companion described them as triangular or diamond-shaped.
After about 20 minutes, the first lights disappeared. A short time later, another light appeared above the spot where they were standing. It, too, vanished after about 10 minutes.
Later, two lights appeared to the east. They moved toward the travelers and stopped. One seemed to hover a short distance above the ground. As the traveler watched them, he noticed a glow behind him out of the corner of his eye. It descended into a dry wash, a natural channel that sometimes carries water, and moved along it. He could not see the source of the light.
The two got into their vehicle and drove to the nearest intersection for a better view of the lights. By the time they arrived, the lights were gone. They returned to their original location, but the lights did not reappear.
After searching, the traveler checked the time. His mechanical watch was 25 minutes ahead of his phone and the vehicle’s clock. He remembered checking the watch earlier that evening, when it had shown the correct time. His companion’s digital watch also matched the phone and the vehicle’s clock.
The traveler said the lights changed direction and did not move like the satellites he was familiar with. They made no sound and left no light trail.
It is not known what the lights were or what caused them to disappear. The traveler thought his eyesight might have affected how they looked, and that the device had created a halo around them; the record offers no explanation for the time discrepancy.
The lights vanished into the darkness. The watch kept running fast.
