In the main version, the Greys are humans from a parallel Earth, one right next to ours. They wrecked its nature and changed their bodies to survive.

A home they can't live in
Their home planet is barely livable, so most Greys live on spaceships. Their bases are around a star we call Zeta Reticuli.
Chapter 3
Their one feeling? Irony.
To survive, they gave up their feelings and the ability to have babies. All that's left is a sense of irony. They think together, like a hive.
Chapter 4
Why they came to us
They needed real human DNA to keep going. So they came to our Earth, and on some deeper level, we agreed. Their family lines nearly match ours.
Chapter 5
Grandparents of the Essassani
Mix Grey brains with human feelings, and you get the Essassani. In the Essassani's time there are no Greys left. They've all become hybrids.
