During an air defense mission, the crew achieved radar lock and recorded footage with a targeting camera but could not get closer than 16.9 miles for a more precise identification. Two prominent contacts were visible in the thermal image, each with two flashing red lights; they disappeared within approximately 1/30th of a second.

An infrared sensor on a U.S. military platform tracked a faint contrast area moving near the sea surface. According to the accompanying mission report, the object appeared round, flew over the ocean, and executed several 90-degree turns. The sensor lost it as it blended into the sea background.
