Magazine Claimed Leader from Distant Planet Broadcast Message About Vietnam
A Philadelphia man believed an article about a message from space expressed a communist viewpoint. The FBI forwarded the magazine to its Los Angeles office.
A Philadelphia man believed an article about a message from space expressed a communist viewpoint. The FBI forwarded the magazine to its Los Angeles office.
A subscriber to a flying saucers magazine thought an article about a message from a distant planet expressed a communist viewpoint. The FBI forwarded the magazine to Los Angeles but did not investigate the organization.
FBI serial 449 in 62-HQ-83894 consists of an FBI airtel/memo dated 10/3/66 from SAC, Los Angeles (file 100-2442-40) to the Director, FBI, transmitting Issue No. 24 (July 1966) of 'Flying Saucers International,' the official journal of the Amalgamated Flying Saucer Clubs of America, Inc. (AFSCA), 2004 N. Hoover St., Los Angeles, edited by Gabriel Green. The Philadelphia Division had received the magazine on 9/19/66 from Mr. Jarvis H. Cooper of the IRS, who alleged that an article on pages 2-3 'expounded the Communist Party (CP) line.' The article, supposedly received via short-wave radio by contactee Bob Renaud from 'Master Kalen-Li Retan, Head of the planet KORENDOR,' criticizes the U.S. 'Military-Industrial complex' and the Vietnam War. The remainder of the document is the magazine itself, including the AFSCA 3rd National Saucer Convention program (Reno, Nevada, July 8-10, 1966) and a multi-page collage of newspaper clippings about UFO sightings from late 1965 through May 1966 (Michigan swamp-gas, Ravenna/Portage County Ohio chase, Wanaque Reservoir NJ, Hillsdale College, etc.).
Mr. Jarvis H. Cooper, IRS, 401 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, furnished the FBI Philadelphia Division with Issue No. 24 (July 1966) of 'Flying Saucers International,' alleging that an article on pages 2-3 'expounded the Communist Party (CP) line.' Philadelphia transmitted to Los Angeles on 9/22/66, and Los Angeles reported to the Director on 10/3/66.
Article published in AFSCA magazine, allegedly written by 'Master Kalen-Li Retan, Head of the planet KORENDOR' (about 400 light years distant), received 5/4/66 by special directional short-wave radio by Bob Renaud. Message criticizes the U.S. 'Military-Industrial complex,' the Vietnam War, and discusses Korendian language, physical appearance, and prior interventions on Earth.
Portage County Deputies Dale Spaur and W. L. Neff, while investigating a routine traffic accident at 5 a.m., were alerted by radio to be on the lookout for an object. The circular object 'about 30 to 45 feet in diameter' traveled at speeds 80-100 mph; chase joined at East Palestine by Patrolman Wayne Huston. Object reportedly resembled 'the head of a flashlight, about 40 feet wide and 18 feet high.' Chase lasted ~30 minutes, ~85 miles, into Pennsylvania, with Spaur and Neff questioned by an 'Air Force colonel' in Freedom, PA.
William Van Horn (Hillsdale civil defense director) and 87 college coeds at Hillsdale College observed an object emitting 'glowing orange, red and white lights' hovering above swamp 1,000-1,500 yards from dormitory for hours. Frank Mannor and family near Dexter reported similar object in nearby swamp.
Mass UFO sightings across wide section of Western Ontario and into Selfridge AFB Michigan radar contact. Multiple variously-colored objects reported. A Thorndale mother and daughter (Wendy, 15) saw white light. Floyd Baxter, Thorndale, reported orange and yellow light moving northeast at ~1000+ feet altitude, very slow.
Six picnicking Denver teenagers (three boys, three girls, all 17) reported being 'chased for an hour by unidentified flying objects.' They observed hovering blue/red/white lights, heard 'pulsating buzzing sounds,' heard 'footsteps' on stone shelter roof, saw 'tall man, who might've been wearing a raincoat.' Car (1956 Ford) malfunctioned; radio played 'nothing but static' until they left the area.
Hundreds of witnesses, motorists, municipal officials, and police observed white/garishly bright disk (~2 feet in diameter) over Wanaque Reservoir over multiple nights. Object reportedly made 'sharp angles' maneuvers, 'almost came to rest at the top of the 1,500-foot long Raymond Dam.' Subsequent sightings in Wyckoff, Lakeland Regional High School, Houdaille pit, Ringwood Avenue overhead ridge.
Two patrolling South African police officers reported seeing a flaming 'saucer,' about 30 feet in diameter, 'shiny copper-coloured… with a slowly rotating top,' which 'took off silently at great speed with flames shooting out of its sides.' Scientists examined the spot; reported a 'six-foot wide section of the tarred road had been badly burned. Grass on either side of the highway was scorched.'
California Highway Patrolman Rex Heflin photographed a 'saucer-or-straw-hat' shaped object 'through his car windshield.'
Wall Street Journal article: 'orange fireball' sighted by residents and pilots in northern tier of states and Canada. Multiple people reported it landed Thursday night; an 11-year-old boy in Lorain, Ohio said he watched it drop into the woods. A woman in Elyria, Ohio (10 miles away) said it plunged into a vacant lot. Others said it streaked into Lake Michigan. Scientists and police combed a 15-acre area near Pittsburgh after a woman saw it 'crash to earth smoldering.' Air Force initially called it UFO, later 'thinks it was a meteor.'
Mrs. Tang reported sighting an object 'with a steel-like shell' 'shaped like a dog'; appeared to her on multiple occasions per article.
British 'Colossus of Rhodes' sighting / 'The Thing' set Britons speculating; officials had failed to explain fully.
Charley Cozens, age 13, claimed to have touched the 'antenna' of a softly-glowing 'flying ship' near Hamilton Mountain police station; was repeatedly questioned by police after a flash of electricity sent him over a fence. Phil Smith, 15, made a rough sketch.
Five-year-old Johnny Thomas (son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Coolidge Thomas) claimed two flying saucers landed in his driveway on the north side of the home; described purple, red and orange colors; 'big fat elephant.'
Louis S. Smith family observed UFO for 10 minutes around 7:50 p.m. — 'not a star, not an aircraft.' Pulsating light, color of moonlight, hovering and moving 'around in a circle.'
Burns Aircraft plane (a chartered newspaper plane) escorted reported UFO; Dr. Asher Chapman, ophthalmologist, observed the object. Object was sighted near Stewart Air Force Base, Newburgh, NY. UFO reportedly traveled at 80-100 mph; FAA Kennedy International Airport reportedly received reports.
Pre-dawn fireball / object sighted 'about 4 a.m.' over Los Angeles area, described variously as 'puff,' 'greenish ball,' 'flat oval green object with a long tail and a light at the end.' Visible for ~half an hour from Hollywood (Sgt. David Tellotson observed over Griffith Park: 'a bright green splotch, elongated, and not blinking'). Similar fireball reported same time from Sacramento and Vandenberg AFB.
Police Constable Donald Cameron, on sick leave at home, looked out a window and saw 'six glowing objects hovering in the distance,' watched them ~30 seconds before they disappeared toward Manchester. 'They were about a mile away… white and glowing. One was bigger than the others with a cup-shaped dome.'
Rural residents reported cigar-shaped object dropping from sky; witnesses David Duncan (KGBH radio Memphis) and Mrs. Ernest Lee saw object resembling 'two parachutes.' J. W. Hatley (Brice farmer) and others watched a ~20-foot-long, 4-5-foot-wide cigar-shaped object 'apparently to have radios and about 2 small batteries on the outside.' Object 'started smoking, burst into flame and burned' without apparent cause. Four-foot strip of 'tin and aluminum' material recovered.
Gary Wilcox, 26-year-old farmer, claimed encounter with spaceship and crew; was in hayloft when he saw 'shiny egg-shaped craft' with two small humanoid occupants who 'explained their interest in fertilizer and farm chemicals' and asked him for fertilizer; while he went to get bag the ship lifted off. Story attracted continuing visitors and rumors.
Mrs. Campbell (director of Spokane unit, AFSCA) and several Spokane persons saw 'a glowing streak of blue' moving in vicinity of Browne's Mountain near city; said it 'could not have been a falling meteor or similar object, as its movement was horizontal rather than vertical.'
Wanaque sightings continued into May. Police chiefs Joseph Cisco and Bentley Spath maintained a vigil. Object reappeared 5/16/66 near Stoatsburg / Board Mountain area according to Charles Capen, former chief engineer of the North Jersey District Water Supply Commission, who reported seeing same object 'two years' previously.
Police Chief Gerald Buchert of Mantua, Ohio (8 miles north of Ravenna) said he took a picture of the object from his front yard but the Air Force told him not to release it.
Bloomingdale youths reported sighting flying saucer to Van Buren county police at the Petrik farm.
"The Philadelphia Division by letter dated 9/22/66, furnished the Los Angeles Division with Issue No. 24 dated July, 1966, entitled "FLYING SAUCERS INTERNATIONAL", which is the official journal of the Amalgamated Flying Saucer Clubs of America, Inc. The Philadelphia Division received the magazine from Mr. JARVIS H. COOPER, IRS, 401 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 9/19/66, Mr. COOPER stated he subscribed to the magazine because his son had exhibited an interest in flying saucers and outer space. He said that on pages 2 and 3 of Issue No. 24 was an article which he believed expounded the Communist Party (CP) line."
Speaker: SAC, Los Angeles, in airtel to Director, FBI, dated 10/3/66
Why it matters: Establishes the predicate for the FBI file: an IRS employee accused a contactee article of being Communist Party propaganda, prompting interdivisional FBI transmittal.
Page 2
"The article, on pages 2 and 3, were allegedly written by Master KALEN-LI RETAN, Head of the planet KORENDOR, which was received on 5/4/66 by special directional short-wave radio by BOB RENAUD,"
Speaker: SAC Los Angeles airtel
Why it matters: FBI document references — without endorsement — a contactee claim of extraterrestrial origin for the article that prompted the file.
Page 2
"The indices of the Los Angeles Division contain no information identifiable with RENAUD, and no investigation has ever been conducted on captioned organization. No further action is contemplated in this matter by the Los Angeles Office, UACB."
Speaker: SAC Los Angeles airtel
Why it matters: FBI declined to investigate AFSCA or Bob Renaud despite the CP allegation.
Page 2
"Make no mistake. Your government is not, in the White House or the Congress. IT IS IN THE PENTAGON, AND IN THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE VAST "DEFENSE"-ORIENTED INDUSTRIES."
Speaker: 'Master Kalen-Li Retan, Head of the planet Korendor' (per Bob Renaud's relay), as published in Flying Saucers International
Why it matters: The specific anti-military-industrial passage cited by IRS informant as 'Communist Party line.'

FBI airtel header / addressee block contains usual file/routing markings; no notable witness-identity redactions visible. The named informant (Jarvis H. Cooper, IRS) is fully unredacted in this serial.
Likely reason: minimal — newly declassified per manifest description ('only minor redactions')
This is a hybrid document: a single-page FBI airtel (10/3/66, SAC LA → Director re: AFSCA magazine, file 100-2442-40, classification 'MISCELLANEOUS') wrapping an 18-page mailed-in copy of 'Flying Saucers International' Issue No. 24 (July 1966). The FBI's own analytic content is minimal (~1 page); the bulk of the document is the AFSCA magazine itself, which contains: (a) the contactee 'Korendor' message that triggered the IRS complaint; (b) the program for AFSCA's 3rd National Saucer Convention (Reno, July 8-10 1966); (c) a multi-page collage of newspaper clippings from late 1965 through May 1966 covering many famous 1966 UFO cases (Hillsdale/Dexter swamp-gas, Portage County / Spaur-Neff chase, Wanaque Reservoir, Oakland, Western Ontario mass sightings, Memphis TX, South Africa Pretoria scorched road, etc.). For corpus aggregation: distinguish FBI investigative content (page 2 only) from third-party content embedded as an enclosure. The 1966 newspaper clippings are NOT FBI investigative findings — they are reproduced press coverage. The named FBI subject of investigation was AFSCA / Bob Renaud / Gabriel Green / 'Master Kalen-Li Retan' (Korendor) for alleged Communist-Party-line content; FBI Los Angeles closed the matter with no investigation. Manifest notes 'newly declassified pages and only minor redactions' — confirmed: the IRS informant's identity is fully unredacted, and no b1/b6/b7C markings are visible in the OCR text.
Jarvis Cooper, who subscribed to the magazine due to his son's interest in space and flying saucers.
The headquarters of the Flying Saucer Clubs organization, which published the magazine, was located in Los Angeles.
The FBI's Los Angeles office stated that it had not investigated the organization and had no plans for further action on the matter.

In Philadelphia, Jarvis Cooper read an article about a message that allegedly originated from a distant planet. He believed the article expressed the views of the Communist Party—a party that supported communism.
Cooper handed the magazine over to the FBI. The article's message from space discussed the Vietnam War and the money the conflict generated for the United States. Thus, a story about a leader from a distant planet became a report on political propaganda.
In 1966, the FBI's Philadelphia office received an issue of a flying saucers magazine. Cooper submitted it to the office, explaining that he had subscribed due to his son's interest in space and flying saucers.
The article presented a message from a leader named Kallen-Li Rattan, described as the head of a planet called Korandor. According to the article, the message was radioed to a man named Bob Reno. The planet, it claimed, was approximately 400 light-years away—a distance light travels in 400 years.
The message depicted the Vietnam War as a source of economic profit for the United States. It also claimed that military factions would not allow the war to end.
Cooper believed the article expressed the views of the Communist Party. The FBI's Philadelphia office forwarded the issue to its Los Angeles office, where the headquarters of the Flying Saucer Clubs organization, which published the magazine, was located. This was the Philadelphia office's explanation for transferring the issue.
The FBI's Los Angeles office checked its records for information on Reno. No such information was found. The office stated that it had not investigated the Flying Saucer Clubs organization and had no plans for further action on the matter.
The magazine article is the sole source of the claim about the message. It is unknown whether it was actually broadcast by radio or if it originated from outside Earth; the FBI found no information on Reno and offered no alternative explanation.
In the magazine, the message came from a distant planet. In the FBI file, only a report of it remains.
