Video of Three Lights Over Gillette Draws More Than 200,000 Views
Chase says the sightings began when she was a child in North Dakota. Her husband reported seeing the lights during night shifts in Montana.

Sommer Chase, of Gillette, Wyoming, filmed three lights spinning in the sky. She says the sightings have followed her since childhood. The expert who reviewed the footage says he has no explanation for it yet, and the lights remain unidentified.
Chase tried to film the lights with her old phone cameras, but couldn’t get a clear shot. “They move all over the sky, up and down,” she told the Cowboy State Daily.
The videos she posted show three lights spinning in a triangle over Gillette, Wyoming. The first has drawn more than 200,000 views, and the comments were less skeptical than she expected. “They say they see them everywhere, from the Netherlands to Australia, in Texas and Pennsylvania,” she said.
Her first memory of a sighting dates to a trip in North Dakota. Her grandmother was driving through fog at six in the morning when a light followed them. “It looked like a car, but it was just the light,” she said. Then it disappeared, and they continued on their way. On another occasion, her father stopped the truck in the middle of the road and yelled that he’d seen a UFO.
The Middle-of-the-Night Call
The sightings went quiet for most of her adult life, then resumed in Montana. Her husband, Cody Chase, worked night shifts at the coal mine in Colstrip and called her in the middle of the night. “He said the lights were outside,” she recalled. He reported sightings beginning in 2019, and Chase saw them herself in 2022. The family moved to Gillette in June, and the lights kept appearing there, during evening walks near Sunflower Elementary School.
What the Expert Says
Richard Beckwith, Wyoming state director for the Mutual UFO Network, reviewed the footage. “I have to agree that the objects are very interesting, and I don’t have an explanation right now for what the user filmed,” he wrote in a text message to the newspaper. “But what can’t be explained today may be explained tomorrow. For now, these are unidentified objects.” Beckwith estimates that 5% to 10% of sightings are never explained, and he places Chase’s footage in that group.
Chase says the lights aren’t satellites or drones because they don’t move like satellites and make no buzzing sound. She has also considered whether they might be military or experimental technology, but no evidence has been presented to support that idea. What worries her more is something else: perhaps someone is watching over the region’s major energy facilities to keep humans from destroying a world that others might also call home.
“Maybe it’s their world, and we’re just living on it,” she said. “They won’t let us destroy their home.”
