On October 18, Lithuania ordered residents in central and northern areas to take shelter. Shortly before, a flying object was detected in the country's airspace, then contact with it was lost on radar screens.
Following the alert, NATO fighter jets were scrambled, and Kaunas Airport was closed for about an hour. Military personnel went to search for debris near a village in the country's north. This was reported by the Al-Quds newspaper. What caused the unusual response, and was anything found on the ground?
From Radar Screens to Ground Search
Lithuania's military and crisis management authorities ordered residents to shelters after identifying the object in the country's airspace. Fighter jets were scrambled to track it, and Kaunas Airport was closed as a precautionary measure.
The object disappeared from radar screens shortly after being detected. Radar is a system that locates objects in the air; the report does not specify whether the object left the tracking range or what happened to it. After contact was lost, teams began searching for debris near the village of Juodgionys in northern Lithuania.
Why a Drone Is Suspected
An initial military assessment raised the possibility that debris from a crashed drone was found in the area. A drone is an aircraft that flies without a pilot on board. According to the report, military sources estimated that such an object might have entered Lithuania via the border with Poland.
The suspicion of a drone is therefore linked to the possible debris and the direction from which it might have come. The Polish military announced it is investigating whether an unidentified object also entered its airspace. The investigation in Poland does not prove that the object that disappeared in Lithuania passed through that country.
What Is Still Unknown
It was not reported whether search teams found any debris, or what the object was. The possibility of a crashed drone is based solely on an initial assessment, and no confirmation has been provided.
The object vanished from screens; the search for an answer moved to the ground.
