The Pentagon UAP Task Force was a US Navy entity tasked with detecting, analyzing, and documenting such phenomena.
The Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF) was officially established on August 4, 2020, with the approval of then-Deputy Secretary of Defense David Norquist. Led by the Navy, it operated under the Office of Naval Intelligence. Its mission was to enhance understanding of these phenomena, gather information about them, and assess whether they posed a risk to U.S. national security.
Its formation came amid reports from military pilots about encounters with objects described as exhibiting unusual speeds or maneuvers, as well as concerns about flight safety and the possibility of foreign technology. The Task Force's work contributed to the initial assessment submitted to Congress in June 2021: it found no clear evidence of extraterrestrial craft, but most cases remained unexplained.
The Task Force operated roughly between 2020 and 2021, and its responsibilities were later transferred to subsequent bodies, culminating in the establishment of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) in 2022. Claims of secret programs to recover crashed craft, including those made by David Grusch, have not been verified or confirmed by the Pentagon.
