On the morning of April 10, 1974, just as daylight saving time was beginning and the sun had yet to fully rise, the 10-year-old son of a local farming family waited for the school bus at the end of the road. He was alone: his sister was sick, and his parents were busy with fieldwork. The gray light of dawn made the yard, the car, and the farm visible, but something to the north caught his eye.
About 10 to 20 feet away, beneath the gray sky, he saw a “sphere” with shiny surfaces. It was larger than a basketball but smaller than a beach ball, and it glowed orange, white, and lavender, lighting up the area around it. According to the witness, there were no visible bulbs or lenses. The light seemed to come from the object itself, giving it a metallic appearance.
The sphere moved slowly toward the boy, coming to within about 10 feet of him and hovering roughly 10 feet above the ground. Despite its proximity, the boy felt no fear; he simply kept watching. The sphere stopped, and he could see it rotating in an unusual way, as if rolling without a clear axis.
