Gold Prospector Aims Telescope at a Line in the Sky
The objects appeared round and silent. Then Johnson noticed something moving at their edge.
The objects appeared round and silent. Then Johnson noticed something moving at their edge.
Gold prospector F.M. Johnson reported seeing a line of silent objects over Mount Adams. He described a dark shape moving at their edge, then the objects tilted on their side and vanished into a cloud.
Section 3 of the FBI's master 'Flying Discs' case file 62-HQ-83894 (Bureau file 62-2938 / 65-477 / 65-480, etc.), 190 pages of mostly OCR'd memos, teletypes, signed statements, affidavits, newspaper clippings, and Air Force CIC reports from June through October 1947. Documents the FBI's coordination with Fourth Air Force A-2 Intelligence (Hamilton Field, California) on initial nationwide flying-disc reports, including the Maury Island hoax investigation involving Harold A. Dahl, Fred L. Crisman, Kenneth Arnold, and Raymond A. Palmer (which culminated in the fatal August 1, 1947 B-25 crash near Kelso, Washington that killed Capt. William L. Davidson and Lt. Frank M. Brown), the July 8, 1947 Muroc Army Air Field sightings, the Snake River Canyon (A. C. Urie) sighting, the Switzer/Placerville sighting, the August 6 Philadelphia object, miscellaneous Idaho/Utah/Alaska/Washington/Montana reports, and ends with J. Edgar Hoover's September 27, 1947 letter to Maj. Gen. McDonald terminating FBI investigative activity in protest over the AAF's 'ash can covers, toilet seats and whatnot' characterization.
Prospector F. M. Johnson reports seeing flying objects similar to those of Kenneth Arnold's same-day sighting; round, ~30 ft diameter, tapering to a point, no engine noise, with a tail-end object 'like a big hand of a clock shifting from side to side like a big magnet'; speed greater than anything he had seen.
Harold A. Dahl claims six 'doughnut'/inner-tube-shaped discs ~100 ft across with 25-ft center hole; one wavers, another bumps it, dumping 'tons' of slag/lava-like fragments onto Dahl's harbor patrol boat, killing his dog and a sea gull and injuring his son. Subsequently admitted by both Dahl and Crisman in signed FBI statement (7 Aug 1947) to be a fabrication; rocks were picked up from a Maury Island gravel pit.
B-25 #1316 returning from McChord Field to Hamilton Field crashes after left-engine fire burns through exhaust stack and ignites left wing, which separates and tears off the tail. Pilot Capt. W. C. Davidson and Lt. Frank M. Brown killed; crew chief T/Sgt. Mathews and passenger Sgt. Taff parachute to safety. Officers were carrying Maury Island 'disc fragment' samples; subsequent press (Tacoma Times, United Press) reported the plane was sabotaged or shot down with a 20mm cannon. FBI investigation found no evidence of sabotage.
Capt. Emil J. Smith and co-pilot Ralph Stevens spot unidentified objects 10° left of course while climbing through 8,000 ft NW from Boise; CAA radio operator at Ontario, OR could not see them.
Multiple sworn affidavits: Col. Gilkey and Maj. Shoop saw a thin metallic, oscillating object 5-8 mi N at ~noon (8 min in view); Lt. McHenry, Sgt. Ruvolo, Sgt. Nauman, and Jannette Marie Scott saw two silver disc-like objects ~8,000 ft heading toward Mojave at ~300 mph against the wind, plus a third object circling tightly; Capt. John Paul Stapp at 1150 hrs in Area #3 observed an ovular silvery object with two thick fins/knobs that crossed (rotation/oscillation), descending at 3x parachute speed against prevailing wind toward Mt. Wilson; in view ~90 sec.
Ward L. Stewart and Capt. William M. Ryherd observe a milky-white unidentified object pursuing a P-80 at 3-4x its speed (~750-1000 mph), then a second object joining in left-right zig-zag fighter-escort maneuver; ~15 sec, course ~120°; not the Navy 'Flying Flapjack'.
Steve Herrman, R. J. (Bob) Madden, and Karl Hermann observe a bright disc 2-3 mi NW at ~3000 ft hovering and fluttering vertically ~50-100 ft for ~5 sec, then 'melting into thin air' to the NE at tremendous speed; apparent 3 ft diameter, 3-4 in thick, polished-nickel finish.
A. C. Urie and sons Billie (10) and Keith (8) report a sky-blue, 20-ft x 10-ft x 10-ft inverted-pie-plate / compressed-straw-hat-shaped object racing down the canyon at ~1000 mph and ~75 ft altitude, jet-like fiery red glow on side; 'just a s-w-i-s-h'; trees over which it passed 'spun around on top as if they were in a vacuum'; Urie believed it atomically powered. Same morning ~9:30 am, Twin Falls County Commissioner L. W. Hawkins and J. H. Brown reported two ~6 ft circular discs at high altitude near Salmon dam, with motor-truck-like roar.
Insurance adjustor Ray A. Switzer (and wife) sees a 4-6 ft long, 10-14 in wide chrome-bright rectangular object descending in a shallow dive at terrific speed, leaving white smoke trail, engulfed in dark gray smoke ~10 ft puff and disappearing completely with no falling debris, ~800 yards in front of his car; following canyon contour. CIC agent B. E. Moon's 26 Aug follow-up at 38°42'45"N 120°47'15"W concluded it could have been a conventional aluminum aircraft viewed at distance.
Multiple independent witnesses across two parts of the city report a bluish-white flaming object at >1000 ft moving NE-to-SW with hissing/buzzing sound and short smoke/condensation trail; estimated 400-500 mph; resembled 'a giant firecracker'. ONI / Army Intelligence found no experimental work in the area; a Charles Lennig Chemical Co. dump fire at the time was confined to the plant and could not have been seen externally.
A. C. Urie and sons (already detailed above) sighting reported via teletype to FBI Butte by SA Banister; described as 20 ft long x 10 ft wide x 10 ft thick, light sky blue, with flames from sides, terrific speed (~1000 mph) down Salmon River, swish noise.
Byron B. Savage (RCA field engineer) and wife observe a flat round white disc ~10:1 diameter-to-thickness ratio, ~10,000-18,000 ft altitude, frosty white, three times jet speed, faint swishing; visible 15-20 sec; Savage holds private pilot's license since 1934 and opines 'radically built and powered, probably atomic'.
Two reports investigated and resolved: Bruce Armstrong + ~10 Boeing engineers saw black/triangular leaf-like 'object' over Boeing Field runway — control tower confirmed it was burnt paper blown across the field; M. A. Nichols and neighbors (incl. Ray Stanley with binoculars) saw a cylindrical object reflecting purplish light at ~35,000 ft — attributed by Boeing Field weather bureau to a routinely released weather balloon.
L. R. Brummett, Sidney Decker, and Mrs. Mamie English see two very bright tapered (belly-tank-shaped) wingless, tail-less, noiseless objects flying NE in formation (one slightly behind/above the other) at 3x normal aircraft speed for 5-8 sec.
Multiple Logan, Utah witnesses (Andersons, Caldwells, Thunells, Halls) report several groups (one set: dozen pigeon-sized illuminated objects; another: 5 groups of 35-60 yellowish-white objects) circling the city at high speed thousands of feet up.
Warden John Henry (Montana State Prison), convict chauffeur Melbourne M. Hill, and Mrs. Henry observe a silver object streaking across the sky, going into a nose dive but disintegrating before reaching the earth and leaving a long pillar of 'gas' that did not blow away — visible while they drove 20-30 miles.
Two unnamed Army officers report a sphere-shaped silver/dull-metal object ~2-3 ft (or ~10 ft per second officer) diameter, traveling due south against the wind below ~10,000 ft cloud cover, considerably faster than any plane; visible 15-20 sec; no vapor trail, no spinning.
Cast-iron metal fragments (~8 in diameter, 3/16 in thick hollow cylinder pieces) found near a railroad track, not from any train/locomotive, subjected to high heat; MIT spectrographic analysis (informant b7D) attributed to 'ordinary cast iron'; one unnamed scientist recalled similar cylinders used in New Mexico guided-missile research but did not exclude other possibilities.
A. C. Urie's earlier teletype-reported sighting was followed up: 20 ft long, 10 ft wide, 10 ft thick light sky-blue object at 1000 mph down the Salmon River with flames emanating from sides, loud swish on disappearance.
William Rhoads allegedly photographed flying discs with a 620 box camera; A-2 requested complete FBI / Phoenix interview.
Richard Sharpe Shaver, featured writer for 'Amazing' magazine, interviewed re telegram to War Department; confirmed his fictional theory that under-earth caverns ('Lemuria') housed a super race that fled to other planets and returns via 'space ships' = flying discs. Indicates Palmer (Ziff-Davis) had told Shaver the FBI would contact him.
"thoy were Round about 30 foot in dimater tapering sharply to a point ... the tail end looked like a big hand of a wlock shifting from side to side like a bic magenst."

Why it matters: Crisman's vanishing the morning after the B-25 crash heightened the apparent intrigue
Page 47
"Don't think I am doing it for the newspapers. All I am interested in is seeing that this information gets back to New Jersey."
Speaker: Anonymous caller to Ted Morrello, UP wireman, Tacoma
Why it matters: Repeated mention of New Jersey by the anonymous caller is one of the more peculiar threads
Page 56
"I most certainly am doing myself out of a good story but I thought you ought to know that somebody has been calling this paper and giving us a blow-by-blow description of all that has taken place in your room since you arrived."

Identities of two Army officers at Fort Richardson, AK withheld throughout narrative
Likely reason: redaction by omission of names; not coded but treated as identity protection
This is the densest section so far covered: it contains the canonical narrative spine of the Maury Island hoax and the Davidson/Brown B-25 crash, plus multiple independent contemporaneous sightings (Muroc, Twin Falls/Snake River, Placerville, Philadelphia, Boeing Field, Logan UT, Fort Richardson AK, Canyon Ferry MT, Oklahoma City). The Wright Field T-2 (Col. McCoy) ruling on 25 Aug 1947 declaring the Maury Island specimens a hoax is a key cross-corpus anchor. Hoover's 27 Sep 1947 termination letter to Maj. Gen. McDonald and the underlying ADC HQ (Mitchel Field) cooperation letter are also load-bearing for any cross-document policy-timeline. Notable people for entity resolution: Capt. John Paul Stapp (later USAF rocket-sled famous), Maj. Gen. Twining, Lt. Gen. Stratemeyer, Col. H. M. McCoy. Witness Fred L. Crisman recurs across UFO and JFK-conspiracy literature; FBI here documents him as Air Reserve Capt., serial O-768961. Confidence held at 0.7: OCR is heavy and many names (Crisman/Crissman, Hermann/Herrman, Naddle, Brown/Brawn) appear with multiple spellings; dates and Bureau file numbers (62-2938, 65-477, 65-480, 100-18945, 100-18999, 100-1403, 98-1762, 100-20698) are consistent and reliable.
In his letter, he wrote that he saw them on June 24, 1947, in the Mount Adams area.

F.M. Johnson was prospecting for gold in the Mount Adams area of Washington State. On June 24, 1947, he spotted a line of objects in the sky and observed them through a telescope.
The objects passed low and silently, with a dark object moving at one end. Johnson wrote that a moment later, they tilted until they appeared to be standing on edge, then vanished into a cloud. He couldn't explain what he had seen.
In August, Johnson wrote a letter to a US Air Force officer. He described round objects, pointed at one end. According to him, they passed low over his position, and he heard no sound from them.
The detail that stood out in his description was at the rear end. Johnson saw a dark shape there, which appeared to be moving from side to side. He compared it to a glass hand or a moving block, but didn't know what it was.
Later, Johnson wrote, the objects tilted on their side. This made them appear as if they were standing on edge, rather than continuing to fly in their usual orientation. Afterward, they vanished into a cloud.
Johnson wrote that the event occurred around the same time Kenneth Arnold reported seeing a line of flying objects. The Air Force officer noted the similarity in the reports and suggested that Johnson might have read about Arnold in the newspaper.
The Air Force officer asked the FBI to interview Johnson extensively. The request was forwarded to the Portland office, which was asked to provide the results of the interview. The material we have does not include documentation of these results.
It is unknown if Johnson was interviewed, or what came of the investigation. The material also offers no explanation for what he saw; the possibility raised by the Air Force officer is that Johnson read about Arnold's report in the newspaper.
In the letter, the line tilts on its side and vanishes into a cloud.
