A cigar- or cone-shaped object reportedly dropped over 300 meters, then ascended rapidly, before appearing to hover in place for several minutes. Radar at Ciampino Airport tracked it for three minutes.

A gyroscope malfunction caused pitch oscillations in the Delta Intelsat III rocket, leading to a series of erratic maneuvers, including a dive and a sharp spin. Control was regained after 72 seconds, but the first stage disintegrated, and the second stage was destroyed by the range safety officer.
