Captain Thomas Mantell died when his F-51 plane crashed during the pursuit of an object he described as a "silver ice cream cone with red on top." The official Air Force explanation stated he lost consciousness after climbing above 18,000 feet; it was later claimed the object was a Skyhook balloon.
