Leland Sammons reported a funnel-shaped object hovering about two meters from his face, emitting fire and sparks before flying northwest and exploding. After the explosion, a bluish-white, mushroom-shaped smoke cloud was seen in the sky; meteorites were later found in the area.

Crews aboard two B-29 aircraft observed a large, multicolored fireball with a dense smoke trail at an altitude of approximately 20,000 feet (6,100 meters). The object was sighted about 100 miles (160 km) southeast of the planes and was moving in a southeasterly direction.
