Two weather observers saw a white, round object moving from northeast to south-southwest, leaving a trail and traversing part of the sky in two to three seconds. They stated it did not resemble a falling star.

The lubricating oil pressure in the booster engine of an Atlas 68E missile dropped, causing the engine to shut down. The asymmetrical thrust made the missile spin into a backward flight, continuing in this state until it disintegrated due to overheating upon re-entry into the atmosphere.
