A spot appears at the lower left of the screen. A military camera turns to follow it as it moves across the frame.
The video runs for nearly five minutes. The camera repeatedly turns to follow spots, but the footage offers no simple answer: What are they? The video is part of a collection of materials that U.S. authorities found on a secure network for classified information. A user uploaded it there, and it was later released to the public as part of an official record.
The Camera Loses the Spot
Another spot appears, this time at the lower right. The camera turns to keep both spots in frame, but one moves off-screen. The first spot disappears too, and the camera keeps tracking the second.
Then the second spot reappears on the left. The camera keeps turning to follow it, until it pulls away and loses the spot from view. The official record describes the movement this way: the spot moves out of the camera’s field of view, then returns to the frame.
More Spots, the Same Movement
Later, another spot appears. The camera turns to follow it as it crosses the screen, and it moves out of view, then back into frame. Near the end of the video, a different spot appears and crosses the frame. Once again, the camera turns to track it.
According to the official assessment, the video was probably filmed aboard a U.S. military vessel with a camera that displays differences in heat as an image. Authorities found the video in a collection of materials gathered after members of the House of Representatives requested access to records related to unexplained phenomena. It was therefore released as official material, but its publication does not explain what appears in it.
What We Still Don’t Know
It is not known what the spots were, where the video was filmed, or whether they were in the water. The title given by the user links them to a submarine and movement into and out of the water, but the official video description does not confirm that. The precise way some of the materials were stored and transferred has also not been fully verified.
The spot disappeared from the screen. What was left out of frame?
