Brief Background
The incident took place in a residential area along the Mill Avenue corridor, near Arizona State University and Sky Harbor Airport. The area sees heavy air traffic, so residents are used to seeing planes, helicopters, and aircraft navigation lights. The unusual lights described here, however, do not match the standard pattern used by commercial aircraft.
The Witnesses’ Account
At 9:10 p.m. on June 2, 2010, three young people—two Arizona State University students and two other residents—watched the mysterious object together. One of them initially thought it was an ordinary aircraft. But when they looked at its underside, they saw a circular shape resembling a disc or saucer. The witness estimated that the object was 1–2 miles away. It hovered silently in the sky, moving alongside a commercial plane approaching a runway at Sky Harbor.
The object was black, with a bright red light at the rear that flashed rapidly. Six to eight white lights were visible at the front, switching on and off in a repeating sequence: one light went out, the next came on, and the pattern continued along the row. The witnesses compared the effect to the lighting at a circus show or LED screens at an event. They also heard a faint sound like chatter, but the object’s flight was strikingly quiet.
A fourth observer, described as “the neighbor’s girlfriend,” joined the watch only after the object was already at a distance, so she saw only the receding red light. She could not tell whether it was another Sky Harbor aircraft or something else.
Why It’s Interesting
The report describes something unlike the usual pattern of aircraft lights: shifting white lights alongside a single red light, without standard navigation lights (red and green lights on either side). The sighting was also reported by four witnesses of different ages who were accustomed to watching local air traffic, lending the account a measure of credibility. The lack of noise and slow movement, together with the unusual lights, raise questions about the object’s origin. Was it an experimental aircraft, a large drone, or something else?
Summary
The report is unverified, but offers a detailed description of a rounded object with a shifting row of white lights and a bright red light. No other reports of a similar sighting in the same area and at the same time have been recorded, leaving the incident open to different interpretations.
