Flashing Oval Object Spotted Over Stephenville, Texas, in 2008

Background On January 8, 2008, at around 7 p.m., residents and security personnel in the Stephenville, Texas, area reported seeing a huge oval object. The sighting received extensive coverage on KRLD and WBAP radio and on local television. The stations also received numerous calls from members of the public expressing concern and interest.

Witness Accounts Witnesses described a smooth object with no wings or tail and a shiny surface that shifted among shades of gray, dark brown, and white. Numerous lights in different colors—orange, white, red, and yellow—appeared across its surface, flashing and moving rapidly. Some witnesses reported seeing “flames” or fire trailing behind the object. They estimated that it was anywhere from half a mile across to larger than a football field and flew about 300 feet above the ground.

Official Response A Joint Reserve Naval Air Base is located nearby, but the Navy said it had no information about flights in the area at the time. Several witnesses said that commercial or military aircraft appeared to follow the object after the sighting. The Navy base, however, attributed the sighting to a bright halo created by two commercial aircraft flying close together.

Why It’s Interesting The sighting prompted a broad media response and drew the attention of security officials, but no known aircraft or unusual weather conditions were documented. The combination of an oval shape, shiny surface, multiple lights, and rapid color changes adds to the mystery and invites further examination of witness accounts and radar data.

Summary The incident is an unverified eyewitness report, but it has several lines of corroboration: multiple witnesses, radio coverage, and interviews with security officials. These lend it a certain weight. Although the military rejected the possibility that the object was a commercial aircraft, no definitive scientific explanation has emerged, leaving the case open to discussion and investigation.
