A Brown-Red Fireball Over Somis

Description of the Event At 1:43 a.m. local time on June 10, 2026, the observer reported seeing a red-orange fireball cross the sky over Somis, California. According to the eyewitness, the light was about 70 degrees above the horizon and headed southeast. It moved quickly, leaving a glowing trail behind it. Two smaller pieces appeared in the trail, moving alongside the fireball.

Context and Initial Interpretation The observer described the phenomenon as a “fireball,” a term sometimes used for a bright meteor that lights up the sky in brownish-red hues. Some reports of fireballs describe meteors burning up in the atmosphere before reaching the ground. In such cases, observers may see a trail of light lasting from a few seconds to several minutes, depending on the meteor’s speed and angle of entry.

What Makes This Sighting Unusual? - High angle – At 70 degrees above the ground, the fireball would have been very high in the sky, which could explain the appearance of a broad “arc.” - Long duration – Most meteors are visible for only a few seconds. Here, the observer says the event lasted between 45 seconds and a minute, suggesting a long trajectory or that the object may have broken apart. - Moving fragments – The description of “a few moving pieces behind it” could indicate that the meteor broke apart or that ice or dust particles were dispersed from the main body.

Assessing the Report’s Reliability This is a personal eyewitness account with no video or scientific measurements, so it should be treated as unverified. However, the description is consistent with known meteor phenomena, making a natural meteor more likely than an unknown phenomenon.

Summary The reported event is a classic example of a fireball, which occurs when a meteor enters the atmosphere and creates a hot, glowing trail. Although the report has not been verified, it adds to NUFORC’s database and offers an interesting sighting for researchers and astronomy enthusiasts.
