What Happened
On May 9, 2026, at 9:25 p.m., two Shelbyville, Kentucky, residents were heading south after shopping at Walmart. Near a bridge on State Highway 55, they spotted two very dark rings in the sky, each about 15 meters in diameter (roughly the size of a nickel held at arm’s length). The rings had a thin halo that glowed in colors they could not make out in the darkness. They appeared to be hovering 230–300 meters above the ground.
The rings moved in parallel, one higher than the other (at the 2 o’clock position), traveling west to east at about 200 miles per hour or faster. The witnesses said their speed varied and slowed before the objects vanished within seconds. They seemed to draw slightly closer, then rise to a greater altitude and disappear from view. There was no sound of an engine or an explosion; the sky remained quiet.
One witness’s son saw the objects only after his parents pointed them out. At first, he thought they were meteors, but he saw no rapid descent followed by a rise. The rings also remained close together, with only a small gap between them, making that simple explanation harder to accept.
Context and Assessment
The report is listed in the NUFORC database as unverified, with no information about other witnesses or photographs. The appearance of the objects, the “halo” around them, and the lack of sound raise questions about rare atmospheric phenomena, such as ice prisms or flashes from high-powered laser lights. Similar reports of dark rings of light have also come from other parts of the United States.
Why It’s Interesting
The report describes two objects that maintained their size and position relative to each other as they moved rapidly in a way the witnesses could not explain. Their halo suggests intense heat or energy. The fact that the objects appeared in parallel and about a mile from the observer, along with their reported path over a bridge and railroad track, makes the case intriguing: Was this a local light-beam phenomenon, or a sighting of an unidentified aircraft?
Summary
So far, there is no further information and no record of photographs or additional witness accounts. The case remains open to interpretation. Our team recommends watching for similar reports in the area in the near future to see whether the phenomenon continues.
