Background On May 12, 2016, at about 11:20 p.m., a young couple from Shanghai took their dog for an evening walk in a newly opened public park about 2 kilometers west of Hongqiao Airport. The night was clear, temperatures were between 20 and 22°C, and there was little wind—ideal conditions for stargazing.

What Did They See? During the walk, the man sat down on a bridge in the park, then lay on his back and looked up at the sky. He described a V-shaped, triangular object with seven brown-orange lights: one at the front, one at each end of the tail, and two or three along the sides. The object moved north at very high speed—“more or less twice as fast as a fighter jet can go,” he said. It passed directly overhead in three to four seconds without making a sound.
