Brief Background
In March 1980, someone reported a sighting of an unidentified aerial phenomenon (UAP) on Interstate 84 in the northeastern United States. The witness was driving home to Waterbury, Connecticut, after working the third shift at a small store in Middlebury. The night was clear, the moon was full, and the road was empty.
What Happened
At around 2 a.m., as the driver descended a hill overlooking Waterbury, he glanced to the left and saw a “mystery” object that at first looked like a gas balloon. Dark against the moonlit sky, it was about 30–40 meters long and 4–5 meters high. It had no landing gear, wings, or other structures typical of a balloon.
The object traveled about 45–50 meters alongside his car, roughly 20–23 meters above the trees beside the road, at an estimated 130 kilometers per hour, slightly faster than the car. Three round “windows” were visible underneath it, each casting a strong blue light onto the trees. Another window at the rear emitted green light. The lights were clear but not dazzling, and the driver reported hearing no engine noise, unlike ordinary gas balloons, which can be identified by their sound.
As the object continued ahead of him, it reached a sharp left-hand bend. Rather than continuing straight, it turned smoothly to the left, as if following the road itself. After passing the bend, it disappeared into the glow of Waterbury rising beyond the hill.
Why It’s Interesting
The report describes several features that don’t match known aircraft: a long, narrow shape, no stabilizing structures, no noise, and the ability to remain at very low altitude above the trees. The blue and green lights, apparently coming from windows inside the object, also raise technological questions: Was this an unconventional energy source? An experimental aircraft? Or a sighting of a natural phenomenon that has yet to be understood?
Summary
There is no further documentation of the incident: no additional witness accounts and no photograph of the object. The account comes only from the witness, who says he observed it carefully and stresses how unusual the case was. With no further information, it remains an unverified eyewitness report, but offers a compelling account of a phenomenon likely to interest anomaly enthusiasts for years to come.
