The Sighting
On July 9, 2026, at 6:20 p.m., three people, two adults and a child, watched from the 27th floor of a building on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, facing east. Their attention turned to the Corona area of Queens. After the sun had set, two glowing red orbs appeared, larger than the airplane lights visible at a similar distance.
The orbs appeared to be about 5–6 miles away. They moved slowly north, steadily descending toward the horizon. They maintained a fixed distance from each other, as if connected by an invisible thread, and flickered irregularly in bursts of red light, which seemed more “organic” than the steady rhythm of airplane lights.
The initial sighting lasted about a minute, and a 32-second video was recorded. About 40 minutes later, at 7:03 p.m., one of the orbs reappeared in the same area of the sky but vanished again before the witness could capture the second sighting.
Background and Interpretation
The report was logged in the NUFORC database under case number 199334. The witness suggested several possible explanations. The first, “Chinese lanterns,” seemed plausible to the witness but did not explain the orbs’ unusual flickering or rapid movement.
The witnesses said they were familiar with aircraft traffic in the area and that the phenomenon differed from what they typically saw from commercial or military flights. However, there are no other reports from the same time and no reports from nearby radio stations or air-monitoring systems.
Why It’s Interesting
The report describes a phenomenon over a densely populated urban area, at a considerable distance from the witness, under lighting conditions that allowed the glowing objects to be seen clearly. Its distinctive features—a pair of orbs, parallel movement, and irregular flickering—make the case more intriguing and invite further investigation of similar sightings in the New York area.
