A Low-Frequency Hum Over a Michigan Farm: Report of a Color-Changing Metallic Disc

Background On the evening of June 15, 1978, during a warm spell in early summer, a family living on a remote farm on the outskirts of Mancelona, Michigan, witnessed an unexplained phenomenon in the sky above the field behind their home. The rural property included an open field of about 80 dunams (roughly 20 acres) and a winding farm road leading to the area. Four people were present: two adults, their adopted daughter, and her boyfriend.

What Was Seen The primary observer described a metallic, disc-shaped object hovering about 200–300 feet (60–90 meters) above the ground and roughly 250 meters (230 yards) away. Colors shifted rapidly around its rim: red-orange, white, and blue, along with a greenish hue noted by two of the witnesses. One unusual feature of the sighting was the deep noise the object produced: a low sound at about 39–40 Hz that shook a nearby structure and caused outdoor equipment in the yard to rattle.

Reactions The group felt the vibrations while touching an exterior wall of a farm building, and the sound was described as a “loud hum” that filled the air. For 10 minutes, everyone stood watching as the object remained motionless. It then began moving slowly to the southeast at about 20 miles per hour, disappearing from the light of the streetlamps.

Why It’s Interesting The report includes several features rarely described in sightings of unidentified phenomena: visible color changes, vibrations in nearby objects, and a measured sound frequency. The witnesses included two adults and a young adult, lending the account a degree of corroboration. The reported physical characteristics—a metallic disc shape and changing colors—do not match ordinary natural phenomena such as a planet, a weather balloon, or gas from plants.

Summary The incident remains unexplained and has not been investigated by official authorities. Although the witnesses were not astronomy experts, one said they had taken college-level astronomy courses. The incident points to the need for scientific investigation of similar phenomena, especially when they are accompanied by measurable physical effects.
