What Happened
One Tuesday evening in March 1976, a Los Angeles resident went into the backyard to water the lawn. The sun had set, but twilight still lingered. Looking east, the resident spotted two large, disk-shaped objects hovering in the sky.
They looked like rounded spinning tops, compressed vertically, with illuminated windows around the center and arcs of flashing lights along the upper and lower edges. One was large; the other was about half its size. They moved slowly, turning gently north, without making a sound.
The witness dropped the hose and ran inside, calling for their parents and older brother to come out. The family watched the objects hover about 300–500 feet above the ground, higher than Route 134, which runs through the area. Cars traveled east along the highway as the discs crossed the sky above them, but none of the drivers seemed to notice.
The objects remained for about 5–10 minutes. There were no sounds or signs of an engine. After they disappeared, the family returned to its routine, but the sighting remained vivid in the memories of the witness and their family.
Context and Significance
Reports of hovering discs, especially those describing flashing lights and silence, are common in the NUFORC database. What sets this report apart is the location, above a major highway, and the witness’s view of the objects alongside moving vehicles. That makes it harder to judge their altitude and distance.
The report was not documented by official sources and is therefore still considered an unverified sighting. Even so, it offers a detailed account of the objects’ shape and movement, as well as their interaction with human activity nearby. These details may contribute to research into the epidermal effects of such phenomena.
Why Is This Interesting?
- Size and perspective – The discs appeared larger than two-story houses, suggesting a considerable altitude of 300–500 feet.
- Traffic below – Cars passing beneath the objects on a highway highlight the overlap between everyday life and an unexplained phenomenon.
- Silence – The absence of any sound or engine noise runs counter to most reports of aircraft sightings and raises questions about how the objects were propelled.
The story remains open-ended, and the witness still asks, “What did we see?” It’s a question that invites readers to consider the possibilities without jumping to firm conclusions.
