The Sighting
At 1 a.m. on Wednesday, August 11, 2010, an employee at a factory in Kent, Washington, got out of his car and looked up at the sky. He noticed an aircraft flying low from south to north and initially assumed it was an ordinary commercial plane. But after watching it for a while, he noticed features that didn’t match any familiar aircraft.
The object passing overhead was triangular, with three brown lights at the triangle’s vertices. A fourth brown light sat in the center, between the two rear lights. Two flashing white beams appeared along the middle of the shape, one at the triangle’s upper tip and the other at its lower tip. Despite its size and bright lights, the object was completely silent. The witness heard no engine noise, which surprised him.
The object was visible for only about 10 seconds, moving at a steady pace similar to that of a commercial aircraft. It traveled from north to south, angled slightly, 10 to 20 degrees toward the northwest. During the sighting, it passed over a nearby helicopter. The helicopter, which had been heading west, stopped and aligned itself with the triangular object’s direction, then continued following the light until it, too, disappeared from view.
Context and Significance
The incident was recorded by a single eyewitness, with no photo or recording, and is therefore considered an unverified report. Still, the detailed description of the triangle’s shape, the lights’ positions, and the object’s movement adds to a collection of similar sightings recorded in the NUFORC database. Reports of triangular objects with amber and white lights have recurred in different parts of the United States, often alongside helicopter or military aircraft activity. The object may have been an experimental aircraft, but without more information, other possibilities cannot be ruled out.
Why Is This Interesting?
The report includes several features that distinguish it from sightings of ordinary aircraft: the complete silence, the unusual lights, and the triangular shape. The account of a helicopter matching the object’s movement also raises the possibility of military or research activity. Although there is no conclusive evidence, the incident adds another piece to the complex picture of unexplained phenomena in the skies over the American Northwest.
