An Orange Light Over Ismailli: A Fireball Sighting

What Happened On May 7, 2026, at around 11 p.m., a local resident of Ismailli, Azerbaijan, saw a bright orange light pass across the sky. The eyewitness said it was somewhat high up, at an angle of about 45° above the horizon, and lasted only about 10 seconds. They described it as resembling a “fireball” and bright enough to catch the eye.

Background and Context Fireballs are reported fairly often, particularly in winter, and some are caused by meteors entering the atmosphere. In many cases, such sightings have a natural explanation, such as a Chinese lantern or an illumination flare. But unexplained bright lights can raise questions about their precise origin, especially when reports include no further details about sounds or complex movements.

Why Is This Interesting? The report stands out for several reasons: - Distinctive color: The light was orange, a color uncommon in sightings of the full moon or stars that may suggest high heat. - Viewing angle: The 45° angle indicates that the source was relatively high, rather than close to the ground, supporting the possibility of an aerial phenomenon. - Brief duration: Ten seconds is long enough for the light to remain in the observer’s field of view, but not long enough to gather more details about its movement or any change in color.

In any case, this is an unverified eyewitness report. There is no camera footage, radar data, or other source to confirm the sighting. The eyewitness’s suggestion of a Chinese lantern is just one possibility among many.

Summary The sighting highlights the importance of accurately documenting phenomena in the sky, including the time, location, color, viewing angle, and duration. Reports like this contribute to databases such as NUFORC and help researchers investigate rare phenomena and try to draw scientific conclusions.

--- The report is based on a single eyewitness account, with no additional visual documentation.
