The Incident
At 8 p.m. on October 1, 1981, a young couple, ages 26 and 23, were driving a gray 1979 pickup truck on M-20, about four miles west of Hesperia, Michigan. They spotted a lime-green dot in the sky several miles away. Within ten seconds, the light descended and approached at high speed, appearing to become a large oval that covered the entire truck.
The couple described the light as brilliant green, so bright that it blocked their view through the windows. They felt extreme fear, almost like the shock of an impending collision, and sensed that time around them had stopped. After a few seconds of sudden “silence,” the object continued southwest, passing over the trees before disappearing over the horizon.
When they resumed driving, they found themselves still on the same stretch of road, traveling at 60 miles per hour, with nothing about their motion having changed. When they got home, the clock read 9 p.m., a full hour after the encounter, though they estimated it had lasted only about 40 minutes.
The couple reported the incident to local police. The officer took their account seriously, noting that other police officers had also experienced unexplained phenomena.
Context and Significance
The report appears in the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) database as case 67734. Scientist Robert Powell cites it in his book UFOs: A Scientist Explains What We Know (and Don’t Know) as an example of altered time perception accompanying a close encounter with an unidentified object. Its distinctive features—green light, a halo, a beam of light, and an oval shape—also appear in several other reports from the 1980s, raising questions about the possibility of poorly understood physical phenomena.
Why Is This Case Fascinating?
- Strange Passage of Time: The couple experienced what felt like “losing an hour”—a 40-minute event that seemed to pass in an instant.
- Intense Green Light: The light was bright enough to obscure the surroundings outside the truck, an unusual feature in reports of luminous phenomena.
- Police Response: The officer took the report seriously, lending credibility to the witnesses’ account.
- Cited in a Scientific Book: The case appears in a book by a scientist seeking to explain such phenomena, adding weight to its research value.
The story remains unverified: there is no visual documentation and no other known witnesses from the area. Still, it highlights the complexity of close encounters with unexplained phenomena.
