What Happened
On July 9, 2026, at around 7:30 p.m., an unusual aerial event was spotted over the beach at Folsom, California. The witness, riding an electric bicycle along the shore, noticed a glowing green-white light high in the sky, which he estimated to be about 5,000 to 10,000 feet up. The light, about six feet across, initially moved southeast before turning south.
The light changed color, shifting from greenish to bright white, and changed size as well. It grew dimmer and smaller before accelerating and disappearing from view. Its estimated speed was around 300 kilometers per hour, though it appeared to move faster after a sudden change.
Context and Significance
The sighting occurred as the sky approached sunset, when reflections of sunlight or aircraft can sometimes be misleading. The witness, however, said the light did not have the usual shape of an airplane: no clear edges or outlines were visible, and it changed too quickly to resemble the movement of a conventional aircraft.
The incident was recorded in the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) database as a “Light,” with no other witnesses reported. Even so, it adds to the number of cases in which people report unexplained lights in open areas during periods of changing natural light.
Why It’s Interesting
The report highlights several features that set the sighting apart from accounts of natural phenomena:
- The light changed color and size suddenly;
- It moved faster than expected for a conventional aircraft;
- No solid object was described, only reflected light.
Such phenomena raise questions about possible sources of lights at high altitude, including military tests, rare atmospheric phenomena, or sightings of unfamiliar technology. To date, no conclusive evidence explains the incident, which remains an unverified report.
