The Incident
At 9:19 p.m. on July 4, 2026, a Chicago resident (Alice) reported an unexplained nighttime sighting. According to the account, the witness noticed a bright white light that appeared to spread around a gray object estimated to be 15–30 meters (50–100 feet) across.
The object was seen from the ground, at a bearing of 295° (northwest) and an elevation of 60° above the horizon. It was moving at an estimated 200–600 kilometers per hour (124–373 miles per hour), at a distance of 60–180 meters (197–591 feet) from the observer.
What sets the sighting apart is the light’s unusual behavior: it flickered, dimming, reappearing, and then vanishing, only to return with a sudden burst of speed before stopping abruptly. This pattern repeated at least twice. On the third occasion, the light came straight toward the witness’s home, hovered over it for a few seconds, then quickly disappeared.
The witness said the light was white, but that a gray halo or mist formed around it, creating the impression of “light all around.” The witness thought it might be a drone, but found no record of any known aircraft in the area at the time.
Local Context
Chicago has seen various reports of unusual lights, including UFO sightings reported in many of the past several years. Reports of objects with a gray halo and sudden flashes, however, are rare. The sighting took place in a downtown subcenter, an area full of traffic and electrical infrastructure that makes it difficult to determine a possible source of the light.
Why It’s Interesting
The report includes several notable elements:
- Considerable size (50–100 feet), well beyond the dimensions of commercial drones.
- Sudden, unpredictable movements, including changes in speed and abrupt stops over short distances.
- A gray halo around the light, a feature not typical of ordinary light sources.
- A direct approach toward the observer, a phenomenon reported only rarely in databases of unexplained sightings.
The phenomenon remains unexplained and has been added to the list of intriguing UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) sightings in the eastern United States.
