Are aliens real? Yes, no, and what we actually know
Updated October 29, 2026
Short answer
There is no proof that aliens exist or have visited Earth. Life elsewhere in the universe is a serious scientific possibility, but no claimed sign of it has passed scientific checks. The Pentagon's UFO office (AARO) and NASA have found no evidence that any UFO is alien, and the files the Pentagon released in 2026 are reports, not proof.
Status: As of October 29, 2026: no government or scientific body has confirmed alien life or alien visits to Earth.
Three questions hiding in one
"Are aliens real?" usually means one of three things. Is there life, simple or intelligent, anywhere else in the universe? Has anything from out there reached Earth? And do governments know more than they say?
Each question has different evidence and a different answer, so this page works like a ladder: first what science knows, then the data on UFOs, now officially called unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), then what governments say on the record, and finally the claims of whistleblowers and witnesses.
Step 1: Is there life anywhere else?
Possibly, and many scientists think probably, but none has been found. Astronomers have confirmed more than 6,400 planets around other stars, according to NASA's Exoplanet Archive, and some orbit at distances where liquid water could exist. Frank Drake's 1961 equation breaks the odds into factors, but most of them still can't be measured. The Fermi paradox is still open: if life is common, why haven't we heard from anyone?
Three recent findings came close to the line. None crossed it:
- K2-18b. In April 2025 a Cambridge team led by Nikku Madhusudhan reported a possible hint of dimethyl sulfide (DMS), a gas made mostly by living things on Earth, in the atmosphere of this planet about 120 light-years away. The hint was at roughly 3 sigma. Independent reanalyses of the James Webb Space Telescope data found it weak or absent. A discovery normally needs 5 sigma.
- Mars. In September 2025 NASA called a sample named Sapphire Canyon, drilled by the Perseverance rover from a rock called Cheyava Falls, a "potential biosignature." It might have a biological origin, but the same minerals can also form without life. Settling it needs Earth labs, and NASA's Mars Sample Return program was effectively cancelled in the 2026 budget.
- Signals and interstellar visitors. No artificial radio signal from space has ever been confirmed (has SETI found an alien signal?). The interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, which swept through the solar system in 2025, drew claims from Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb that it might be technology. NASA and most astronomers identify it as a natural comet, and a Breakthrough Listen search found no artificial signals from it.
Step 2: Has anything visited Earth?
The most detailed data comes from AARO, the Pentagon's UFO office. Its annual report, released in July 2026, covered 319 new reports from June 2024 to May 2025. It resolved 114 as balloons, birds, satellites, aircraft and drones, and moved 191 to an "active archive" because there wasn't enough data to reach a conclusion. By the end of May 2025 its files held 1,870 reports in all.
Unresolved does not mean alien. Most open cases are a blurry photo, a single witness or a brief radar return, with too little information to explain anything. AARO says none of the cases it resolved pointed to breakthrough technology, and that "to date, no evidence suggests that a USG or private entity has ever captured or exploited UAP-derived materials."
Step 3: What governments officially say
No government has confirmed aliens. AARO's historical report of March 2024 reviewed US government investigations since 1945 and found that none had confirmed any UAP sighting as extraterrestrial technology. It also found no empirical evidence that the US has been reverse-engineering alien craft. NASA's independent UAP study team wrote in September 2023 that the peer-reviewed literature holds no conclusive evidence of an extraterrestrial origin for UAP.
2026 brought a new wave. On February 19 President Trump directed agencies, on Truth Social, to release government files on aliens and UFOs, and told reporters the same day that he didn't know whether aliens were real. The Department of War has since published seven releases under its PURSUE program, the first on May 8 and the seventh on October 23. The department itself said many of the materials "have not yet been analyzed for resolution of any anomalies." They are reports, photos and memos, not proof. You can browse them in our official files hub.
Barack Obama said on a podcast in February 2026 that aliens are "real, but I haven't seen them," then clarified that he saw no evidence during his presidency that extraterrestrials had made contact. For a dated status, see has the government confirmed aliens?
Step 4: The claims, and why they're unproven
The strongest claims have come from witnesses under oath. In July 2023 David Grusch, a former Air Force intelligence officer, told a House subcommittee he had been informed of "a multi-decade UAP crash retrieval and reverse engineering program," and that people with direct knowledge told him "non-human" biologics were recovered. In November 2024 Luis Elizondo, a former Pentagon official, answered "yes" when asked whether the government had run secret crash-retrieval programs. In September 2025 lawmakers were shown a video of a Hellfire missile striking a glowing orb that appeared to come through unharmed.
None of these claims came with public evidence: no material tested by independent labs, no program documents, no imagery anyone could verify. The witnesses said details could only be shared in a classified setting. Sworn testimony shows that someone stands by an account, not that the account is true. AARO concluded in 2024 that the reverse-engineering claims were inaccurate and largely the product of "circular reporting" within a small group of people.
Israel had its own version. In December 2020 Haim Eshed, who headed the Defense Ministry's space program for nearly 30 years, told the daily Yedioth Ahronoth that a "Galactic Federation" had an agreement with the United States. He offered no evidence, and no official body confirmed it.
What would count as proof
Scientists and intelligence analysts broadly agree on the bar: an extraordinary claim needs evidence that other people can check.
- Physical material examined by independent labs, with the results published.
- A signal picked up by several observatories, repeating, with no human explanation.
- A sign of life on a planet or in a sample, at high confidence, with no plausible non-biological explanation.
- Data from several different sensors on the same event, released in full.
So, are aliens real?
The honest answer has three parts. Life elsewhere: maybe, and nobody knows yet. Aliens visiting Earth: no evidence. Government-held craft and bodies: claimed, not shown. Anyone who says it's settled either way is claiming more than is known.
And if that changes? We've laid out that scenario in what happens if aliens are real.
Questions and answers
Are aliens real, yes or no?
Not proven. No alien life has been found and no UFO has been shown to be alien. Life elsewhere in the universe is possible, and many scientists think it likely, but as of October 2026 it is unconfirmed.
Is there alien life in the universe?
Nobody knows yet. Thousands of planets have been found around other stars and some could hold liquid water, but no sign of life on any of them, or on Mars, has passed scientific checks.
Have aliens visited Earth?
There is no evidence they have. AARO and NASA have found no UFO case of alien origin. Most reports turn out to be ordinary objects, and the rest lack the data to explain them.
What does NASA say about aliens?
NASA searches for life beyond Earth but has not found it. Its 2023 UAP study found no conclusive evidence that any UAP is extraterrestrial, and its 2025 Mars result is a "potential biosignature," not a detection of life.
Did Obama say aliens are real?
On a podcast in February 2026 he said "They're real, but I haven't seen them." He then clarified that the odds of life somewhere in the universe are good, and that he saw no evidence of alien contact during his presidency.
Do the 2026 UFO files prove aliens exist?
No. The Pentagon's PURSUE releases are declassified reports, photos and memos, and the department says many have not been analyzed yet. None has been presented as proof of alien life or visits.
Are there real photos or videos of aliens?
No authenticated photo or video of an alien being exists. Many viral clips are hoaxes, props or AI-generated videos.
